Dear all,

Apologies for writing in English.
I'm helping a client with their style guide in Japanese.

Their old style guide had a recommendation:

• Add a Cho-on for 2 or less Katakana, e.g.:

Dear all,

Apologies for writing in English.
I'm helping a client with their style guide in Japanese.

Their old style guide had a recommendation:

• Add a Cho-on for 2 or less Katakana, e.g.:
カー(Car), カバー(Cover)
• Do not add a Cho-on for 3 or more Katakana, e.g.:
エレベーター(Elevator) becomes 「エレベータ」

But the client reviewer suggested more generous usage of Cho-on, ie to change the recommendation that Cho-on should always be used, even for longer words. They cite recent Microsoft style guides, where the long form is more common nowadays.

Is there any consensus about this in the translator community?

Thanks a lot for your input!

Always cho-on Mar 13, 2017

The JTF style guide (section 2.1.6) recommends always using the cho-on, so I would go with the client's more lenient usage suggestion.
