I took this photo last month on my way to Canyonlands National Park in Utah.

The Monitor and Merrimac Buttes are 600 feet high monoliths which are so-named because of their resemblance to the two Civil War ironclad ships. The Monitor, to the right, was the Union ship. The Merrimac was the Confederate ship.

孙前辈, 您排的照片中的景色和青海、甘肃和新疆交界处的戈壁风光有点相似之处。真遗憾以往没想到拍下照片,当时觉得荒凉不值得拍摄。下次可不能错过,尤其是《英雄》中出现的雅丹地貌。

触景生情大概是人类的共性吧。美国人给那两块巨石如此起名,大概是由于他们因兄弟相残的内战史而感到切肤之痛,以此来儆戒后人吧!如果每个民族都能如此反思自己的内战史,那就好了。

确实如此。当年我大学毕业后在宁夏贺兰山下的戈壁滩待了将近两年时间。那时也有风和日丽的日子,但飞沙走石的日子则更多。我离开那里已经整整40年,但还是很怀念那些日子,甚至一直想回去看看那里现在是什么样子。不过,这个愿望恐怕永远也无法实现了,因为那个地方是部队驻地,对外不开放。
