Trados Aug 31, 2017

Some of my clients do not ask for CAT Tool in handling their documents but when it comes to be necessary, I use Trados a lot.

I only use WF Classic, as it was the easiest one to use that I came across. I don't know how to use several of the functions though, but it does what I need it to.

The Word interface is just so much simpler and better than any of the others I've tried.

That said, it is a bit crap in some ways, like not always updating numbers in matches, which can drive me crazy at times.

I mean, what kind of idiot software decides, immediately after I translate "Tabell 1" as "Table 1", that "Table 1" is then a 100% match for "Tabell 2"?!!!

General situation of CAT usage in 2017 Aug 31, 2017

Hi all, thanks for answering! I know this poll was posted several times in the past, but the last I found is from more than a couple years ago, and no (recent) statistics about CAT usage/market shares seem to be readily available anywhere, so I thought I would post this to have a basic idea of the current situation.

Trados Aug 31, 2017

When I was at University the lecturers drummed it into the students that Trados was THE industry standard CAT tool and that we required to be familiar with using it prior to entering the translation market place. Since graduating, I have found that it is indeed the CAT tool must frequently requested by agency clients and I often use it even when not required to do so by clients.

Trados Aug 31, 2017

and Across about the same.
Both great to use and each has its good and bad sides
I have used Transit which is not bad, but seeing as nobody uses it and the license costs are quite high, I gave it up.
I personally hate MemoQ and do not use it any more

Yes, it would be interesting to track usage trends over time. I only use Trados, but I have noticed a growing number of my clients are switching to MemoQ. The good news is that the CAT tools seem to be increasingly compatible, so in the future, it may be irrelevant which tool you use.

Wordfast Pro and MemoQ Aug 31, 2017

I use Wordfast Pro whenever a client has no preferences. A few of my regular clients like me to use MemoQ and provide me with a temporary license. I like both equally well.
I have tried Across a few times and hated pretty much everything about it so I gave up trying to get to know it better. This was a few years ago now, so things may have improved.

And I believe ProZ would be in a privileged position to do something like that.

Additionally, looking at the current results, I am surprised Trados seems to hold such a consistent advantage over the competition, especially MemoQ, since, like you, I also noticed a growing adoption by clients (not only agencies).

I started using Trados 2007, which also works directly on Word. It's interesting for visual context (and this changes a lot the way we translate). The problem is that many of my jobs don't have docs as source format (presentations, spreadsheets, websites, xml, etc.) so I started to use a standalone CAT tool.

Today, when clients don't ask me any CAT at all, I always use Wordfast Pro 3, where I concentrate my terminology base (glossary).

I also like Memsource. Light, clean, fast, good to read.

But I'm noticing a growing number of translation companies using weird web-based CAT tools. I consider these terrible.

$500+ on software? Nope. Aug 31, 2017

In my university studies while I was taking a class on Portuguese translation and localization our professor scored some temporary licenses for us and we got to learn how to use MemoQ. A few semesters later our university offered "Intro to CAT tools" for the first time where we got temporary licenses to learn how to use Trados. At the end of the course we were introduced to MateCAT.

After graduation when I had my choice of the three, guess which one I picked? As a student fresh out of college, ready to tackle on my accrued debt?

MateCAT does just what I needed it to do, for the kind of tasks I'm assigned. Nothing extraordinarily high-tech. And it's free. I will never pay for Trados, not even with the group buy discount.
