Discussion

Iwona Szymaniak Dec 13, 2006:
It is my concern too that Caryl's expressions are too figurative.
makawa (asker) Dec 13, 2006:
it's taken from a European arrest warrant. limb, eye, arm - sounds like poetry. In Polish it's more "down-to-earth" - that's why I'm not sure whether it's what I'm looking for

agree Caryl Swift : But I'd have expected it to be 'to hide from justice' or 'the system of justice/the juducial system'. :-)

to hide oneself from the eye of the law/the (strong/long) arm of the law

'the eye of the law' is certainly a very common expression:

http://tinyurl.com/ycwn6e

as are the expressions involving 'the arm of the law:

http://tinyurl.com/ybpj7p
http://tinyurl.com/ydp7nj

But - do any of them work in your text?

Re. your note above and SzIwonka's comment below, if what you need is dry, officialese, then you could use:

'to hide oneself from the law'
Peer comment(s):

agree Marek Daroszewski (MrMarDar) : how about 'hide from the long arm of the law', e.g. http://www.westlake-tx.org/en/inthepress_.html?News=645&0eec...

Thank you :-)
agree Iwona Szymaniak : I like them, Caryl but I feel the text (am not sure) is 100% informative, dull. Report style. Would the expresions you propose work in this context? :-)

If the text is 100% neutral, dull, informative then I'd suggest the same expression, but devoid of all body parts. I've added a note to my answer. Thank you :-)
