Discussion

Kim Metzger (asker) Oct 19, 2008:
Afraid not, Ken. That's all I have.
Ken Cox Oct 19, 2008:
Kim -- do you have any idea whether it is sintered or forged?
Jonathan MacKerron Oct 19, 2008:
"stamped tungsten carbide" gets a number of googles - my metallurgical dictionary offers "stamped" for "pressen"
Kim Metzger (asker) Oct 19, 2008:
Direkt gepresst Hi, Jonathan - the problem is with "direkt gepresst"
Jonathan MacKerron Oct 19, 2008:
solid carbide garners lots of googles in association with Vollhartmetall, have you already ruled this out?

direct pressed solid carbide

I see a lot of hits for the combination of "solid carbide" and "direct pressed", with the latter apparently being the opposite of 'ground (to shape)'.

agree hazmatgerman (X) : Found three sources for "direct pressed" in context, but all are subscription services I do not have access to. Term seems to fit though.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks to you, Ken and Gillian. In this case I knew the bits were carbide bits, so it wasn't necessary to use hard metal. But I'll keep Gillian's point in mind for the future."

directly pressed, solid, hard metal

The bit is pressed (probably HIP, hot isostatic pressing) directly to the required shape, i.e. it is not machined but more near-net shaping.

Incidently, "Hartmetall" is probably better rendered "hard metal" even though it probably has a high degree of carbide. Hard metals include carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides and siliconized SiC (aka SiSiC).
