Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) surgical report
I know this term has been asked before, but I need to be sure about it in this context.

This is in a report on a patient with lung cancer who had the upper left pulmonary lobe removed. After the description of the surgical procedure, there is a section with the following headings:

Tratamiento Postquirúrgico: en REA [this is an abbreviation for Reanimación, I believe]
Solicitud the Anatomia Patológica: No
*Extemporánea:* No
Recuento Material: No

And that is the end of the report.

What does Extemporánea mean here? If I just write "Extemporaneous" it doesn't make any sense to me, so I think there must be another meaning. None of the other KudoZ answers helps with this situation, either.

Thanks/grazie/muito obgrigado :) To both of you. This is actually what I had thought, and put in my translation already, but I based it on my knowledge of the Italian version "estemporanea". I wanted to make sure it works the same in Spanish. And - Felipe - I suppose it refers to a biopsy specimen (I wasn't quite sure), because they do report sending pathology samples during the surgery.

intraoperative I'm sure i've come across this fairly recently (possibly in Fr>En) - i don't have time to dig out the file now, but I am pretty sure it meant intraoperative - a test being performed during the operation

Joseph... Does this refer to a biopsy or surgical specimen? If so, "extemporánea" means intraoperative histological/patholocigal examination (a frozen section biopsy, for instance).

It just refers a study made in the course of surgery, often done to confirm that the resection margins of a tumor are free of cancer cells.

In general, extemporáneo = late/delayed

It is not clear late what, although it could be "solicitud extemporánea", which would be "late/delayed request".
