déposer ou faire déposer un avis de défense
The addressee is not subpoenaed (cité à comparaître), but merely notified he/she has 10 days to enter the Appearance and Defense, soit un avis de défense ou "acte de comparution" (au Canada).

The context is clearly telling us there is no need to file any "notice of admission", hence "avis de défense".

: OK but what if he/she wishes to file a notice of admission? A broader term is needed//an "appearance to answer the claim" can be an admission and offer to pay by instalments in my experience
