What is Orthopaedic cast?
Casts and splints are orthopedic devices that are used to protect and support fractured or injured bones and joints. They help to immobilize the injured limb to keep the bone in place until it fully heals. Casts are often made from fiberglass or plaster.

What is a plaster cast?
It is a gauze bandage that has been mixed with certain resins. When this is submerged in water applied to your limb, it becomes solid.
What is the difference between a 'backslab' and a full cast?
A 'backslap' is a slab of plaster that does not completely encircle the limb and is used for injuries which have resulted n a large amount of swelling. It is secured with a bandage to accommodate the swelling. This type of plaster is only temporary and will probably be completed at your Fracture Clinic appointment. A full cast encircles the limb and does not need to be secured by a bandage. It only allows for a minimal amount of swelling.
How long does it take to dry?
A plaster cast will take 24-48 hours to dry completely although it may feel dry by the time you leave the department. It will initially feel very heavy but less so as it dries. Do not try to speed up the process by using a hair dryer or other appliance. During this time you should take extra care to protect the cast. For example do not rest it on a hard surface or write on it.

Waarom wordt een gipsverband aangelegd?
Een gipsverband wordt aangelegd om een gewricht of bot te immobiliseren in een bepaalde stand. Dit is uiteraard vanzelfsprekend bij een botbreuk, maar ook veel andere aandoeningen wordt een gipsverband aangelegd. Zo kan het bij een verstuiking of zelfs een kneuzing aangewezen zijn het bot of gewricht tijdelijk op rust te stellen door een gips.
Een goed aangelegde gips vermindert de pijn in belangrijke mate. Daarom wordt ook na veel orthopedische operaties tijdelijk een gips aangelegd
Hoogstand
De eerste dagen na het aanleggen van het gipsverband is het aangeraden het lidmaat in hoogstand te plaatsen. Dit betekent hoger dan de rest van het lichaam. Dit kan zwelling voorkomen of doen verdwijnen.
Wanneer het lidmaat verder blijft zwellen, kunnen binnen het harde of knellende gipsverband letsels optreden van huid, zenuwen en bloedvaten.

Gipsbroek
Voorafgaand aan het aanleggen van de gipsbroek kan de arts een tractiebehandeling van 10 tot 14 dagen in het ziekenhuis laten uitvoeren. Deze behandeling is bedoeld om de spieren en pezen van het heupgewricht op te rekken.
Na de tractiebehandeling probeert de orthopedisch chirurg op de operatiekamer de heupkop weer in de kom te zetten. Dit gebeurt onder narcose zodat uw kind volledig ontspannen is, wat het terugplaatsen vergemakkelijkt. Indien dit terugplaatsen lukt, wordt ter plekke een gipsbroek aangelegd.
