Dutch plus translation This would be a situation where I would enter the Dutch in italics and offer a translation in brackets. Only using the official translation 'citizen service number' ( as per Max' ref) might not provide the reader with enough information.

Is translation for use in UK/USA? If you are translating an extract from the GVB it is doubtful whether that is destined for an English speaking market. Probably for someone who will need to use the BSN but needs instructions in English. Therefore I would stick with Kate's suggestion and leave it untranslated.

neutral writeaway : this is 'one' translation-one dico lists citizen's identification number which imo is better. keep the NL in any case /since it's the old SOFI no, it's an identification number - someone's service number sounds strange in English. sounds military.

thanks, but why is 'identification' better than 'service'? /Now I understand. Citizen's service. Well, in Dutch it sounds strange too. "Sofinummer" was much clearer.

Er is meen ik niet echt een equivalent, maar dit wordt vaak gebruikt (vaak ook afgekort als TIN).

National Insurance Number

You could use this, but it covers slightly different areas from the BSN, but it is an equivalent.
Failing that, I would refer to the original BSN and [reference] an explanation.

It is used for tax purposes, one needs it to get paid and to receive tax credits etc. I agree that it doesn't cover entirely, but it is the closest thing in the UK.

Even if this is for a UK audience, as you say yourself the NI Number is not the same as a BSN.
agree writeaway : I think that keeping the NL and using this in ( ) is the best solution. of course, it's not the "official" translation but this is clearer.
