I'm looking for an idiomatic way to render 'verjubelen' in English. (Dikke) Van Dale doesn't even list it, but Encyclo.nl defines it as 'het meteen na ontvangst op ondoordachte wijze weer uitgeven'.
To me, it sounds a bit like what many lottery winners do: live the life of Reilly thinking it will never end, only to discover one day that there's nothing left. But what's the equivalent in English??? All ideas appreciated.
Context: "Het aardgas heeft de Nederlandse schatkist in de afgelopen vijftig jaar zeker een kleine 200 miljard euro opgeleverd. Waar de miljarden precies zijn ingezet is moeilijk aan te geven. Wel duidelijk is dat vooral in de beginjaren de gasopbrengsten zijn 'verjubeld', zoals oud-politicus Jan Terlouw (D66) het eens noemde. ,,In de beginjaren werd er met geld gesmeten. Het was een gouden tijd voor buurthuizen en verenigingen...."

In the context of a lottery winner, one might also think of "splurge". In slang, one might say "to blow it all". I think the two alternatives I have given fit best in your context.

We have the same word in German (verjubeln), and that is the English translation I found for it.

: agree it's the meaning but to 'blow' the gas revenue may be a bit too 'explosive' in English. ;-) and it's very informal language for this sort of article.

i.e. the income from the gas industry was splashed around, maybe even adding 'indiscriminately'.
Example sentence:
