Discussion

Ken Cox Dec 7, 2005:
You can take your pick of the suggested answers, but I'd like to point out that galoshes are waterproof overshoes (typically made of rubber) -- and in the US when I was a child, they were specifically waterproof boots worn over regular shoes.
Björn Houben Dec 7, 2005:
Can you give some additional context? the 'ke' ending is a diminutive ending used in many parts of Flanders, where the word means 'slipper' (amongst other things).

(little) slipper

Slang for little slipper
And galoshes ('overtrekschoenen'- literally "pull-over shoes") seems to be correct.

agree Dave Calderhead : As galoshes, the very low sort rather than bootee type (:-{)>

slippers

If it's a Flemish text, "sloefke" is a diminutive of "sloef", slippers, house shoes

"overtrekschoeneN" (a "n" is missing) may be used in laboratories or to protect shoes from the rain (on a bicycle for instance)
