English term

in favorem Fidei

English to Chinese Law/Patents Religion
Causa pro solutioni vinculi matrimonialis in favorem Fidei

BTW, I know this is Latin, not English, but since there is only one translator receiving Latin to Chinese questions, I am trying this combination too ;-)

Discussion

Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jul 14, 2006:
Anyway, I don't think believers enjoy any privilege in matter of divorce.
Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jul 14, 2006:
For this reason, a translation such as 优先权 for "privilege" is misleading. However, if people accept a misleading term, I would have nothing to say about it.
Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jul 14, 2006:
Not offensive or defensive, "privilegium" is kind of 特权 which the ones who are entitled to enjoy are not entitled to have the priority in comparision to those others who as well enjoy the privilege.
RaffaellaG (asker) Jul 14, 2006:
I believe that 信仰优先权 is the translation of privilegium in favorem fidei, which should be the full meaning of the sentence in my text. It seems to be a specific legal term of the Code of Canon Law.
BTW, as far as the marriage is concerned (quoting Canon Law, Can. 1150): In a doubtful matter the privilege of the faith enjoys the favour of law. :-)

Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jul 14, 2006:
老实说,在 favor 这个字词上,我看不出有优先的意思。离婚这档子事那来的“信仰优先权”呢?优先是比较容易获准的意思,但因婚姻双方皆为教友,两人想离婚反倒由于 favor fidei 而更麻烦、更不容易呢。

受到信仰保護的

A marriage between two believers (catholics) called sacramental marriage for it is "in favorem fidei" and can be resolved (solutioni vinculi matrimonialis) only through a process approved by the Pope.

Your question is concerning the expression "in favorem fidei" in which "favorem" should not be interpreted as simply the English word "favor." The phrase means "in protection of belief" or "protected by belief."

This why I translate it as above. Cf. http://archive.hsscol.org.hk/Archive/periodical/ct/CT027F.ht... and take especially a close look of Canon 97, §1.

In short, a sacramental marriage is protected by belief and shall not be separated less than death. This is why I translate "in favorem fidei" as "受到信仰保护的.

The key lies in the Latin word "favor." It is not always simply a favor in sense of English language. It can be "protection."

"In favorem" can be interpreted as "under protection of."

For sure, you can understand "in favorem fidei" as "in favor of belief" as well, but that wouldn't affect the meaning --- because of the belief it is to be obeyed that a sacramental marriage shall not be separated less than death.

Unless there is a "causa" which is to be approved by the Pope. And this is what's about with "Causa pro solutioni vinculi matrimonialis in favorem Fidei" in your text, I guess.

Thanks, but please look up in a Latin dictionary. I have enough reasons to translate the phrase that way.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. http://www.ccccn.org/Article/Teo/Dogma/200509/20050925053427.html"

in favour of faith

1. in favorem fidei, literally, in favour of faith, or to the advantage of the Christian faith ( in keeping with the word 'favorem' which is in accusative case)
2. in considering the cause for the dissolution of the bond of marriage (be it among baptized, unbaptized, or mixed couple; or the widowed, or even the Mormons), the arguments are always in favour of the faith (generally speaking, in favorem fidei is a way of reasoning)
3. therefore, I am in favour of the Chinese translation from the website cited by Wenjer Leuschel.( under article 104).

The guiding principle of in favorem fidei is set out by St Paul in 1 Cor 7:12-16.
