Not sure if this fits your context exactly. Have a look at the references below. If this is research on the brain's response to auditory rules (as referred to in the documents below), "Erfassung" is probably "recording" or "compiling a list"....

Tamas' translation of "Erfassung" as acquisition or learning seems plausible. You are the one who has to make the decision based on the overall context. Since you know what that is "processing" could also be a possibility.
