German term

Aufschmelzung

German to English Tech/Engineering Metallurgy / Casting material composite
The source text differentiates between Aufschmelzung and Anschmelzung. What would be the correct terms in English?
Here is the sentence from a patent application:

Selected

layers adhered or deposited by melting (or fusion)

German term (edited): Aufschmelzung/Anschmelzung

molten coating/partial melting

Although these terms look almost identical in German, they are in fact 2 completely different concepts:

anschmelzen = partial melting of the surface, i.e. base metal only
aufschmelzen = deposit a molten coating (e.g. spray coating), i.e. base metal + coating

The whole idea of this process is to change the microstructure of the surface layer (e.g. for hardening purposes).
