kick

If we are talking about a sudden, usually unexpected, increase in pressure in the drilling mud (which fills the borehole and is used to counteract the pressure of the interstitial fluids in the rock being drilled), then the correct term is "kick".

neutral Roald Toskedal : I think this term is somewhat wider than just pertaining to 'mud kicks', this is about hazards and accident-prone situations in general. OK, yer in the clear with your 'if'! However, I maintain that it is wider than that... :)
