español term

lencha

May offend español al inglés Otros Medios / Multimedia Telenovela
Hello all,

I'm translating an episode of a Mexican telenovela and one girl calls another "lencha estúpida." I haven't been able to find lencha in my various books of slang, and an internet search brought up two conflicting definitions ("lesbiana" or "india"). Is there a native speaker who can help me with this term?'

P.S.: Sorry if this is an offensive term.

Thanks DLyons.

José, I went with the nickname Lencha, as the girl's name turned out to be Florencia. Thanks for your help. If you post an answer I can give you the points.
José J. Martínez Mar 27, 2015:
Any name ending in enza or renzia wold have a "Lencha" nickname... My aunt Luz was Tia Lucha...
Anna Brown (asker) Mar 27, 2015:
Thanks José, I didn't know it was a term used to insult maids. That isn't the context here (one girl is jealous of the other, thinks she's messing around with her boyfriend) but it's a good thing to know for the future.

I'll investigate further to see if by any chance the girl she called "lencha" is named either Lorenza or Florencia.
José J. Martínez Mar 27, 2015:
Mexican Telenovelas do not deal with optative sexual inclinations... I would rule out the L word...however if it was a homeowner... like the ultrarich that these novelas always have, verbally slapping around a maid... verify that the term was not "chacha" a short for Muchacha, which is slightly peyorative to maids. This term would pass the TV guidelines of Mexicco.
DLyons Mar 27, 2015:
In Nicaragua, as an adjective it's "tonta".
José J. Martínez Mar 27, 2015:
My wife said it can be Lorenza or Florencia... nickname Lencha, as Nacho for Ignacio...
José J. Martínez Mar 27, 2015:
If they were referring to the maid... it is a despective term for a maid... Or her Nickname was Lencha.... maybe they decreased the offensive word.

Florencia

Nickname for that name is Lencha, like Naccho for Ignacio and Pepe for José.

Lesbian

I believe this is slang in Mexico for Lesbian, does that fit the context?
Note from asker:
It could be, in the sense that the speaker is jealous and fighting with another girl over a boy, she could resort to such name-calling. Thanks for the answer.
