I used to go regularly to conferences, workshops and seminars when I worked in-house, but for the last fifteen years every time I plan on attending one, work comes my way or some family thing comes up that goes against it. I must say also that some conferences I’ve attended were a waste of my time…

I have attended several conferences, and many times the Danish Powwow has been more like a conference, with two days of events, discussions and networking. Sadly, it had to be cancelled last year, but I really hope they will start up again!

I have attended the CIoL conference twice, once some years back, and then last year, just before the lockdown! I attended a very good Proz.com conference, now many years ago, in London. I would not attend these every year, as there is some overla

I have attended the CIoL conference twice, once some years back, and then last year, just before the lockdown! I attended a very good Proz.com conference, now many years ago, in London. I would not attend these every year, as there is some overlap in the programmes. But if I had time and could afford it, I would probably go to more!

If you choose carefully which conferences to attend, they are an excellent chance to pick up new ideas and impulses and keep up to date.

They are also a good way to meet colleagues and exchange ideas. For me they have proved to be a source of good jobs! When colleagues are offered work that they cannot take on - in language pairs or subject areas they do not work in, for example, they have sent them on. I try to recommend a colleague, too, if a good client sends me a job that is outside my scope.

Yes, IAPTI conference in Buenos Aires 2017. Jun 14, 2021

Yes, I attended the 2017 IAPTI conference in Buenos Aires wherein I met many colleagues from Argentina and their families too.

Conferences are a great opportunity to widen our cultural knowledge by visiting the local museums and restaurants.

I´ve attended many conferences in Europe and the U.S. and have found them to be worthwhile.

I´ve gotten the most out of the ATA conferences.

There was a period in my life a couple of decades ago when I was attending professional conferences on a regular basis, though they had nothing to do with translation specifically.

Some of them were worthwhile; others were not. Some of them were huge - up to 25,000 participants - but I always felt I got more out of the smaller ones, which were more social so you could make new contacts more easily.

In 20 years working in-house, I attended several conferences, most of them very usefull and interesting. However, these were in other areas, not related to translation.

As a translator, I have only attended one conference, that was actually excellent, developed by a client (agency) to their translators, about how undue literal translation and false cognates are, and other common mistakes we usually make in translations. This was extremely useful in my carreer, and from what I see around the groups we participate, I believe I've learned in a week some things people take four years to learn in college.
But no other conferences after that attracted my attention. Every time I was interested in one, I gave up when I read the summary or when I talked to the developers.
