I tested ChatGPT, of course. I played with it ad nauseam, and I told my friends all about it. And I was really enthused about its capacity. I think that was in December last year. But then I saw a frenetic increase in the use of AI-generated blog posts all over the net, which caused my interest to wane. See more I tested ChatGPT, of course. I played with it ad nauseam, and I told my friends all about it. And I was really enthused about its capacity. I think that was in December last year. But then I saw a frenetic increase in the use of AI-generated blog posts all over the net, which caused my interest to wane. Unfortunately, I developed a new skill, that is spotting AI-generated texts. And I should sincerely ask you to accept my friendly advice, Henry. I believe you can craft yourself forum posts much better than ChatGPT or any other AI. Last time I mentioned my spotting of the use of AI in a forum post, my post had gotten deleted. I hope this time that doesn't happen. As for using AI in my work, I also tested its quality for translation. It yielded wonderful results for Turkish to English, but it failed miserably at English>Turkish. Since my target language is Turkish, I saw no use in it. It's a wonderful beast, I must admit. Not only for translation or copy-writing. Honestly, I can't say I care too much about the future of our profession. If we, the human translators, will be dragged out of the market, so be it. It is not the end of the world. But its quick prevalence over the blogging sphere made me develop a dislike towards it. ▲ Collapse | | | ibz Local time: 17:27 Member (2007) English to German + ... It has been less than warmly received. Many feel ProZ should be supporting translators at this time. As everyone knows, ProZ is and always has been on the side of the translator. AI is a tool. (As Mr. Satan said, "use the right tool for the right job".) Introducing ChatGPT into the KudoZ help network (and paying the bill for that) is, apart from being a bit of fun, a way for ProZ to help direct some of the power of AI to the benefit of our people: the linguists. I wonder if you read the posts / comments on ChatGTP's answers and the integration of this feature into KudoZ in the forum (not sure if I'm allowed to post the link, but you'll surely find it ...). ChatGTP in KudoZ is a nuisance and no fun for professional translators. Just to give you an example: https://www2.proz.com/kudoz/english-to-german/games-video-games-gaming-casino/7155634-top-dog.html?phpv_redirected=1 All examples are clearly made up and ChatGTP doesn't even get the grammar right. You're saying "... Introducing ChatGPT into the KudoZ help network (and paying the bill for that)..." Are you implying that ProZ - and if so me as a paying member as well! - is paying for this? Would be a reason for me to stop being a paying member.

As a KudoZ™ answerer, my goal is to empower translators and language professionals with prompt and reliable assistance. Despite the self-aggrandising, complacent, laughable blurb, a browse through ChatGPT's answered KudoZ says otherwise, in any and all the above fields, www.proz.com/profile/670924?popup=kudoz&mode=answered The bot KudoZ history is not visible on its profile page. I would like that to change, so that everybody can access it. Thank you. So, Henry, considering the above, to me ChatGPT is a 'tool', but in its slang meaning. I am not interested in helping AI 'learning the craft'. I do not use AI for my translations, as I am sure it would be hopeless (not good with creativity, idiomatic expressions, cultural knowledge, dialects, neologisms. On top of everthing else, as per the above). Rather than concentrating on AI, as ProZ seem to be doing of late, I'd rather the platform would fix what's not working/up to par, tackling bugs, spam, bottom-feeding outsourcers, fraudsters and the like, and implement all the suggestions that have been brought to your attention over the years. As a way to show that you truly ARE on our side, you know, while many of us feel you are not. Thank you. Edited to rectify a possessive.

Henry Dotterer wrote: Did you know? ChatGPT is a finalist in the translation contest (in some language pairs) I don't doubt that that has been your experience, in your language, with the types of work you've tried it on. My personal experience (testing with Japanese, non-technical stuff) is different; for me, translations produced by ChatGPT (with sufficient context) are the best so far. I wonder how many people here are aware that ChatGPT has qualified for the finals in several language pairs in the current translation contest. This has never happened before. Is that scary? Sure. But if I am asked my opinion, I think that we, the professionals, should seek to wield the power of large language models to do the best work we can, as efficiently as we can, for the benefit of our clients and ourselves. Pretending these tools are not useful and capable in translation strikes me as disingenuous, and unlikely to lead to good outcomes for us as language professionals. All right, I understand. Your experience with your working languages is different and better. I already use ChatGPT for helping me to better understand certain terms and giving me explanations and examples. I don't need it here and from what I've seen in the English to Portuguese pair, the translations it proposes are pretty bad, to say the least. Regarding the translation contest, I've never participated as a contestant and/or voter, due to lack of interest and time, in particular. The news doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is the number of colleagues who complain about the poor organisation of that translation contest. There are many threads on this topic. I'm not denying the usefulness of AI or pretending it can't be useful in translation, I'm just saying that, in my case, it doesn't work as machine translation because it provides very poor translation quality, and it's too literal. For me, ChatGPT is useful as a research assistant and not as a translation assistant. AI plays no role in my life - unless it's operating below the hood in any of the applications I use. If it is, I don't care. I'm too busy for AI. Though I did hear a young guy trying to impress a beautiful woman he was trying to pick up at a London Underground station. After she had finished describing her work as a model, she asked "and what do you do?" He replied in a kind of nonchalant, couldn't care less way "Me? I'm in AI". Boom. Mission accomplished. Good points, Emirjeta. Baran, the person asking the KudoZ question decides whether or not to invite an answer from ChatGPT. Maybe people aren't doing that as frequently in Turkish because ChatGPT is less useful in Turkish? You can try ChatGPT out here, by the way: chat.openai.com You can write something like "Please translate the English term 'chum' into Turkish. The context is fishing." Me: Please translate the English term 'chum' into Turkish. The context is fishing. ChatGPT: In fishing, the English term 'chum' can be translated to Turkish as "yem." Me: Please translate the English term 'chum' into Turkish. The context is social life. ChatGPT: In the context of social life, the English term 'chum' can be translated to Turkish as "arkadaş" or "dost." I wonder if these are right. | | | Pages in topic: < [1 2 3 4] > | There is no moderator assigned specifically to this forum.
