这不应该是巧合 May 14, 2007

学医的转行后有所作为的大有人在。鲁迅医疗科班出身,不料成了小说家,罗大佑30出头突然不做医生,转向歌坛,硕果累累。还有Sun Yatsan ,无需我多言了。。。
对于医学,自己是一个100% layman. 不过西医和英语密不可分,我觉得像Shaunna, Sunny Xia, Yu Zouren应该是前途无量。

谢谢Wenjer前辈的指点。只是国内翻译公司给译员的价格想当低,甚至医学论文这类专业性很强的工作中译英只有70元/千字,让人感到得不偿失。以这样的价格,有专业背景,又英语很好的人,谁愿意做呢?

谢谢Wenjer前辈对我的Profile看得很仔细。“外用贴敷”应怎样译更妥帖呢,查《汉英医学词典》和《汉英中医学词典》中,“贴敷”都是"Topical application" 不知怎样译才能更让外国人看得懂。

(这种小品的 pointe 不容易翻译,但愿以上的翻译还叫人看得懂。)

你这里的情况我也会用 topical application. 一般软膏什么都是这么说明的。
topical application 就是局部外用的意思。由topic,有重点,有目标而来,我这样理解。

当初听说中国的翻译者工资每千字六十到八十元人民币时,觉得很不可思议,但想一想台湾的翻译者大多每千字四百到八百新台币(差不多一百到两百人民币),也差不多一样不合理。

以 Sunny 的样本看来,在国际市场上应该有每千字八十到一百美元的价码,但最近看到一家纽约的翻译公司寻求翻译医药类的文本,给的价钱是在这个标准的一半一下,有点吃惊。基于团结的想法,我觉得有专业背景的人大可以不必理会那种 job offers,让业者吃过一些亏后,自动提高价格,好找到恰当的翻译者。

我原来也不知道是那个译法的。Topical application 听起来很清楚。

感觉不必为一时打不开市场而降低价码。总会有些识货的吧。各位前辈都花了多长时间才找到价格合理又能长期合作的客户的?

你一喊“各位前辈”,结果各位“前辈”、“后辈”就都不敢出声了。我只想告诉你,pharmaceutical 的市场是很大的。我每年光是与
Libin PhD
合作仅仅为一家客户翻译的pharmaceutical patents就有三十多万字。这些专利都是到中国大陆和台湾申请的。另外还有零零碎碎找上门来的。由于精力有限,就没有再主动去发展客户,但市场肯定是很大的。另外,这方面中翻英的市场也很大。只是多数翻译社强调必须得是native English speaker,而native English speakers中真正能翻这种技术性玩意儿的却又不多。不知那些翻译社何时能从自己给自己念的紧箍咒中解脱出来。对我来说,我还不大愿意做中翻英,因为英翻中已经够我喝一壶的了(不过我不喝酒)。;)

有人给化工下的定义是:
Chemical engineering = chemistry + mechanical engineering

也许我可以给Pharmaceutical 下个类似的定义:
Pharmaceutical = organic chemistry + medical science

我对Medical science是外行,好在Pharmaceutical patents中,organic chemistry占极大比重。至于比较侧重于Medical science的文件,对我来说那一壶不好喝,还是让能喝、爱喝的同行去喝吧!

既然你的背景是pharmaceutical + English,就要充满信心!Cheers and good luck!

1月份也接了50万字的case May 18, 2007

谢谢孙兄。1月份的时候也从终端客户那里直接接了50万字的pharmaceutical case,当然一个人作不完,相当一部分分给国内的同仁了。不过感觉从国内直接客户那里接活的价格还没有给国际翻译公司打工的价格高。

那就开发国际市场,哪怕每月只翻译5万字,轻轻松松地收入也会比翻那50万字多。

我刚来 proz 时,一个月做不到 200 美元。反正台湾和中国的翻译业者不可能给我合理的价格。台湾某些业者认为我贵得离谱。中国曾有一个单人业者大概是想试试我的功力,看看能否找到可以给我下马威的错误,说要给我 0.08 的价格翻译一份文件,但得先译一段近两百字的试译稿。呵呵,果然给他找到一处可以教训我的地方,然后他说紧急要我在一天内翻译好两千字;我的回答是:Suit yourself.

第一个给我合理价格的客户是乐音介绍来的客户,以 0.12 的价格从中文翻译成英文;那是一份法律诉讼文件,我和一位在加州的同仁合作,我译他审校,50:50,客户满意,陆续给我项目,从此信心大增,市场也渐渐打开。从一个月不到 200 美元,到一个月 2000 美元以上的收入,前后时间不超过一年。

我能,也相信别人能。另外要特别指出,这里有许多像乐音这样愿意帮助新进者进入市场的同仁,他们平常都不说什么,但看到可造就的人才必定在适当的机会给予协助。

About the rate Apr 18, 2012

Recently, someone in California sent me an email questioning the rate the translator mentioned in the above post. I think the rate (0.12) the translator offered to the client is much higher than what a translator in Taiwan can usually get (0.04~0.07 USD/word), but is certainly too low for a translator residing in California. Since the money was actually shared 50/50 by a translator in Taiwan and a reviewer in California, it was fairly good for the translator in Taiwan, but not so good for the r... See more

As far as I know, that particular client usually would accept a much higher rate for translation and would have another translator to check the translation at its own additional cost. Therefore, the translator should have quoted at a much higher rate for the project. Of course, I can understand why some translators are willing to work at very low rates. Perhaps, they are too eager to get the projects for various reasons.
