'100 pages of urgent translation wanted a.s.a.p., preferably overnight or on Sunday morning. We need a translator who won't throw in the towel after the intro/ preface/ recitals'.

Maybe there are clients of all shapes and sizes who deem the Diploma to be a guide to this job spec and timeline, others who consider it irrelevant.

The Diploma is the gold standard. With it a translator is telling the world about the quality of his or her work and professionalism. In circumstances such as you describe, a professional, having taken on such a job (after assessing the time-frame allowed) will deliver.
