I agree with Tamara saying that a translator has to be selected according his real capacity and that is by means of a sample translation.
I also would say that every profession everywhere has to be practiced after passing some exams, graduating a school.
Would you go to a doctor who has no such school and paper, who is though not authorised in this field, or a lawyer without diploma and authorisation? No, you would not.
Why should it be different for translators?

Why should it be different for translators?
Somebody said here that translators are international and wondered who should authorised them?
Translators should pass some exams (real ones) and receive authorisation in the country they live or have studied. Yes, there is a problem that certificates and not only for translators have to be accepted everywhere.
Specialist of many countries face such a problem, because though they graduated a University their diplomas are not acknowledged,not accepted in e.g European or American coun tries. Why? That is a question.
Still there are possibilities to submit their documents in the countries were they moved, to be accreditated.It is rather complicated, but it somehow works and maybe sometime it will not be necessary anymore.
Translators have to be authorised in order to practice their profession,for the specific languages and fields.
In many countries this doesn't seem to be necessary, but how then can one be sure that person is really a translator and a proper one? One possibility is the sample translation.
To translate legal documents and/or work in Courts, one has to be sworn translator, that is to be authorised by the Ministry of Justice, or a similar organisation.
Legal translation are very difficult and serious.
Being a member of a translator organisation does not say anything about the translator. It is just like being a member of a trade union.You pay an yearly tax and have some rights, some protections, you maybe supported in some way, but nobody there
knows or shows your capacity as translator.
"Native speaker" is also not important, although it is very much asked and discussed. There are pro's and against this "label".
Personally I think it is nationalistic to exclude people from practicing a profession just because they where not born in a specific country, without knowing the way that person speaks a specific language. There are a lot of native speakers who are not good translators, they do not have skills of specific fields, or talent to use a foreign language.
I think the criteria to evaluate and select a translator should be:
- test translation
- certificate for a specific pair of languages and field
- punctuality and seriousity,honestity
- experience and skills
and for legal translations also to be sworn translator. ▲ Collapse
