Spanish term

a mano contraria

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Does this mean that each of panels is a mirror image of the other, or simply that they are on the port and starboard (babor y estiribor) sides of the ship?

"Ambos paneles son funcionalmente idénticos, pero dispuestos a mano contraria para adaptarse a la situación de los respectivos lanzadores."

Discussion

S Ben Price (asker) Mar 20, 2008:
Let me provide a bit more context - they are launcher tubes for missile counter measures - They have mentioned that they are on each side of the boat, but believe me repetition and repition and over-overwordiness are the name of the ame in this document.

as a mirror image

pero dispuestos a mano contraria = but arranged as a mirror image

Creo que en cualquier parte se trata de una "imagen de espejo".

on port and starboard sides

I think they are identical but on opposite sides. I worked three years in a shipyard and that's how I understand this. Good luck.

right-handed and left-handed

Like everyone else here, I'm guessing in the absence of a pucture or more context.

... pero dispuestos a mano contraria para adaptarse a la situación de los respectivos lanzadores.
-->
... but arranged in right(-handed) and left-handed versions to suit the configuration of the launchers on each side.

e.g., if the panels are hinged at one side, then one will open one way and the other will open the other way.
Note from asker:
Thanks, I read your post and it inspired to try to find a picture of the thing (in a document with more than a million pages). I found it!!
