A lord asked Takuan, a Zen teacher, to suggest how he might pass the time.
He felt his days very long attending his office and sitting stiffly to receive the homage of others.
Takuan wrote eight Chinese characters and gave them to the man:

Not twice this day

Inch time foot gem.

(This day will not come again.

Each minute is worth a priceless gem.)

You'll have to do some digging... Oct 24, 2011

Hi Sara,

First of all, GREAT topic! I am so glad to see others are interested in one of my passions, Zen(Buddhism)!

Although it's not just a book of koan, you can find a link to an English translation of Takuan's "The Unfettered Mind"(不動智神妙録) on Wikipedia, here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unfettered_Mind

You also might search online for "沢庵和尚全集" which is a 6 volume collection of his most famous writings("The Unfettered Mind" is found in Volume 5). It's currently out of print, but you might be able to dig it up somewhere. For instance, I found volumes II and III of this collection, here:

http://search.newgenji.co.jp/sgenji/L3/?10059530/

The ISBN-10 number for this collection is: 4-8205-7965-7
and the ISBN-13/EAN is: 9784820579656

Look here:
http://isbn2book.com/a/takuan%20soho/
for more ISBNs for his other works, they should help you in your search!

If you find a good source for similar such texts, please post it here and let us know!
I, for one, would be very interested!!

other links for hard to find material Oct 30, 2011

Tank you for the link, it really seems like a great site for collectors! I see it's possible to purchase a lot of material by and on him there.

The thing is, rather that Takuan's works in general, I just needed to check the small portion of the original Japanese text about the "Inch time foot gem" poem I quoted above. The koan itself is such a minor detail in the whole project, that I was kind of hoping to find the quote through some searchable full text on line, rather than buying

The thing is, rather that Takuan's works in general, I just needed to check the small portion of the original Japanese text about the "Inch time foot gem" poem I quoted above. The koan itself is such a minor detail in the whole project, that I was kind of hoping to find the quote through some searchable full text on line, rather than buying and having to read through whole books to find it.

In this regard, probably everyone already knows this links, but I'll post them here anyway.
The Japanese National Diet Library (http://opac.ndl.go.jp) and the 近代デジタルライブラリー (http://kindai.ndl.go.jp), for contemporary publications, often have scanned copies of old and rare books. You can download/print just ten pages at time, however if you just need to check a source and already know the exact page/chapter, it is a reliable and fast method.

I will keep searching on the titles you provided me, and post here if I find something of interest.
Tank you again for your helpfulness!
