Source text - English This palace was originally owned by the Morosini family and was purchased at the start of the 18th century by the Sagredos, a noble family who had lived in the Santa Sofia district for centuries.
The façade onto the Grand Canal is proof of the Byzantine origin of the building, which was altered several times in subsequent centuries. The original ground floor with the doors leading onto the water and the first floor with its tall arch windows topped on slim pillars, were completed in the 15"' century by the addition of second floor, which has tracery frieze around the middle mullioned windows of the Portego or central hall.

«Укен , Укен, да, Укен, ну, надо же, ойбай , это же Укен, тот самый Укен, от именно Укибай, Укибай Омаров, товарищ Омаров …»
Ныгмет Сафин, обрадовавшись тому, что вспомнил-таки имя сидевшего у
двери смуглого старика, с облегчением расправил свои затекшие лопатки, однако старик даже не взглянул на него; он продолжал сидеть неподвижно, уставившись в пол.
На каких только работах совхоза не перебывал этот невысокий, кряжистый как пенек старик: в свое время и на поле выходил, и в заповеднике поработал, и лошадей пас. Если не изменяет память, сейчас ему семьдесят один-семьдесят два, на пенсию его проводили года два-три назад, с тех пор он его и не видел. «Ох, уж эта проклятая работа, - сказал Ныкан , мысленно задав себе трепку. – Носимся то и дело то с хозяйством, то с делами, а от народа, оказывается, все более отдаляемся …»
Костлявый, подобно матерой гончей тазы , человек в момент безжалостной самокритики энергично потер свой лоб, от чего его длинные пальцы издали сильный хруст. Потом Ныкан снова потянулся, откинувшись назад, и снова посмотрел на товарища Омарова: тот был обут в кирзовые сапоги, вата из перевязанного чимбуром чапана выглядывала из прорех то там, то здесь, а сам он сидел, провалившись в объятия старого, видавшего виды красного диванал.
С одной стороны, Сафин удивлен: тот самый Укибай, которого он знал три, пять, десять лет назад, если что не по нему, любому тут же заткнул бы рот; он не раз собственными глазами видел его в моменты, когда тот самонадеянно считал, что может безнаказанно говорить все, о чем думает. Это было и в пору его работы звеньевым, и на конеферме – Сафину многократно приходилось выгораживать его перед разными важными уполномоченными, которых он ставил в очень неловкое положение. Но именно таким, богобоязненным старцем смиренного и кроткого вида, он его никогда не видел.
Сафину тут же припомнись времена, когда старик не только перепирался, но и громко скандалил, а теперь вот словно дал клятву никому не перечить. Потом Сафин, который отчасти устал сидеть на жестком табурете, отчасти нервничал из-за того, что пропускал прием своего шубата в обед, окликнул старика:
- Ну, Уке.
Старик не шелохнулся.

Contento de haber recordado el nombre del anciano de tez morena sentado en la puerta, Nygmet Safin desencogió con alivio sus hombros contraídos, pero el anciano ni siquiera lo miró. Continuó sentado inmóvil, mirando al suelo.
La de trabajos que había tenido en el koljós este viejo bajo y rechoncho como un tocón: hizo las labores del campo, trabajó en la reserva natural y hasta pastó caballos. Si no le fallaba la memoria, ahora tendría setenta y uno o setenta y dos años, se había retirado haría dos o tres años, y desde entonces no lo había vuelto a ver.
—Este maldito trabajo —pensó Nykan , regañándose mentalmente a sí mismo—. Hoy nos liamos con las cosas de la granja, mañana con los quehaceres pendientes, y al final resulta que estamos cada vez más alejados de la gente...
Huesudo como un corrido galgo tazy , en ese momento de despiadada autocrítica se frotó vigorosamente la frente, lo que produjo un fuerte crujido de sus dedos alargados. Luego Nykan se estiró de nuevo, se echó hacia atrás y volvió a mirar al camarada Omarov. Llevaba botas de lona, el algodón salía por aquí y por allá de los agujeros de su chapán atado con un chimbur , estaba sentado, hundido entre los abrazos de un desgastado sofá rojo que ya había vivido lo suyo.
Por una parte, Safin está sorprendido: si para aquel Ukibay a quien conocía, hace tres…, cinco…, diez años, algo no hubiera sido de su agrado, le habría callado la boca a cualquiera en un instante. Más de una vez lo vio con sus propios ojos en aquellos momentos en los que arrogantemente creía poder decir con impunidad todo lo que se le pasara por la cabeza. Así lo hacía cuando trabajaba como jefe de grupo, también en la granja de caballos: muchas veces le tocó a Safin interceder por él delante de diferentes comisionados a los que había puesto en una situación incómoda. Por lo contrario, nunca le había visto de aquel modo, como un anciano timorato de aspecto humilde y dócil. Safin recordó los tiempos en los que aquel viejo no se limitaba a replicar, sino que también armaba escándalos a voces, y ahora parecería que hubiera jurado nunca jamás contradecir a nadie. En este momento, Safin, que en parte ya se sentía harto de estar sentado en un taburete duro y en parte nervioso porque se perdía la ingesta del shubat de su almuerzo, llamó al anciano:
—Bueno, Uke…
El anciano no se movió.
—Vale, Uke, al menos escuche..., —habló de nuevo.
