Italian term

L\'opera diventa museo

Italian to English Art/Literary Music music museum
Text for a museum based on operac items (sheet music, costumes, scenery, etc.).

I was given a short text already in English to check and revise if necessary and the title had been translated as "Opera turns museum".
After reading my corrections (including changing the title to "Opera becomes a museum", the client asked if her version was wrong and I said that using the verb to turn, a possible alternative would have been "Opera turns (or turned) into a museum"...
I would never have used to turn on its own, such as, for example: milk turns sour, or he turned red with rage, the soldier turned traitor.
Do you agree?

Discussion

Wendy Streitparth Oct 21, 2015:
On tripadvisor, those who have contributed just call it the opera museum, so as it is in the ticket section this would probably suffice.
Wendy Streitparth Oct 21, 2015:
@ Phil: you'll find it under "biglietti"!
philgoddard Oct 21, 2015:
I agree with Wendy that neither option works.
Could we have some more context, please? It appears to relate to the Verona arena, but I can't find the actual text on their website.
Simon Charass Oct 20, 2015:
Another possibility can be "Opera's Museum".
Wendy Streitparth Oct 20, 2015:
Maybe you could say "Transforming opera into a museum" or something similar.
Wendy Streitparth Oct 20, 2015:
Personally, I don't think there is much difference between the two options: neither sound very English!

I agree I'm having a hard time pinning down why it doesn't work, though. I don't think it is a grammar issue with the verb or the parts of speech. I think it is just too much of a stretch of logic. I can imagine a headline reading: Space Capsule Turns Museum, for instance, meaning that a space capsule is given a new function as a museum. I guess using "opera" as a poetic shortcut for what is a collection of opera-related objects that are "museumified" is just too far from how we usually communicate in English.

The opera becomes an exhibition

personally as it is an exhibition housed in the Opera Museum (a section of Verona's main art gallery at Palazzo Forti) made up of exhibits from the opera stage and so on...I would use this

I'm writing from Verona itself incidently:)
