English term

higher yielding transistors

English to Chinese Tech/Engineering Computers: Hardware
The move to dual core is a bit of a "catch 22". In order to deal with the fact that a dual core die is twice the size of a single core die, AMD and Intel have to use higher yielding transistors. The larger your die, the more defects you have; so, you use higher yielding transistors to balance things out.

..."The performance of the dual core Extreme Edition comes within 5% of the 3.73GHz EE, despite the fact that the single core chip has a 16% clock speed advantage, but it is still slower overall. "
wherestip Apr 21, 2005:
This sentence you posted earlier kind of indicates that the single core chip runs at a higher clock frequency than the dual core chip: ...

(oops, I got cut off) ...yields. The catch22, I think, is that older technologies typically run at lower frequencies.
wherestip Apr 21, 2005:
Yes, your understanding is correct. The bigger the die, the more defects just because the die size is roughly twice the size of a single core. Therefore Intel used older, proven technology to manufacture the dual core chips in order to obtain higher yie

in order to get better yield, they need to use proven technologies, such as 130nm or 90nm, which is not as dense as bleeding edge technologies, such as 60nm or even denser

Thanks.

Wenjer, IMHO, it means that in order to get better yields, Intel has to use proven technology, such as 90nm, instead of using bleeding edge technology, such as 60nm or beyond.
