Can companies like AT&T avoid being forced down the ultility pipe route, while SI’s cream off the margins? “There are always challenges as an industry like ours co ntinues to shift and change,” says Archer. “There are always going to be challenges around new entrants and various types of competitors attempting to assert themselves. When it is all said and done, what is really at issue here is ‘how do you create a network fabric that delivers an experience and a level of performance that is predictable, reliable, responsive and at a cost of ownership that is as low as possible at its most efficient level?’ That is a network-centric challenge. Most integrators would, I think, admit, that they [do not] possess the depth of skills and other attributes that I have described to be able to do that easily.”
