Italian term

cervello va ripulito

Italian to English Other Journalism therapy
"La prima cosa che devono capire ?che il cervello va ripulito come qualsiasi arma o veicolo da combattimento. Tutte le sere i soldati controllano lo stato del loro fucile; altrettanto devono fare col proprio cervello per esaminarne lo stato di salute."

The first thing they must understand is that the brain must be ****** just like any other weapon or fighting vehicle. Every evening the soldiers inspect the state of their guns; they should do the same with their own brains to examine its state of health.

looked after,tended to, cleansed

I think I would say mind as opposed to brain here. I think the article (if that's what it is) refers to a soldier's state of mind and the importance of staying sane and looking after one's mental health.

agree CLS Lexi-tech : agree on mind too

thanks!
agree Valentina Pecchiar : right, the original sounds like "taking care", not brainwashing (lavaggio del cervello)

agree Lindsay Sabadosa (X) : "Mind" instead of brain and I like "tended to" although the others work.

the brain must be washed

I think this refers to brain washing.
Peer comment(s):

agree Elena Sgarbo (X) : Yes, brainwashing seems to be the idea

neutral CLS Lexi-tech : I would be hesitant to imply brainwashing: the connotation here is positive, soldiers should take care of their brain (I would use mind) as they take care of their guns
2 hrs
neutral Valentina Pecchiar : Paola was an instant quicker than me ;) Brainwashing is "lavaggio del cervello"

cleaned

you clean a gun, you would never wash it, and the text has nothing to do with brainwashing. It means that you have to keep your brain aware and ready for action.
Peer comment(s):

agree Rachel Fell : perhaps even cleaned and polished, or something to mean keeping it in tip top performance condition

agree Vittorio Preite : io lascerei "brain": è più diretto e fisicamente "riconoscibile", the brain needs to be taken care of. Naturalmente la frase indica tanti significati e penso che l'autore voglia significare che il soldato deve rimanere calmo in situazioni spesso difficili

agree John Walsh : I'd keep "mind"
