Discussion

Lara Barnett Nov 30, 2012:
Costruzione I also agree with Jim.
tradu-grace Nov 30, 2012:
@Jim & @Sylvia Yes, Jim may be right, it is the construction/creation of social justice but 'costruzione cosciente di una giustizia sociale' in my view means that the **cosciente/consapevole etc.** has to be the construction/creation or whatever you want to ...
Good night.
James (Jim) Davis Nov 30, 2012:
This is NOT building awareness It is building/constructing social justice.
It is the aware or knowledgeable construction of social justice. Or is there something I can't see here?

**to create awareness** among the victims of bondage and the civil society at large. Involvement of media and the local administration through social awareness programme aims at mass mobilization and policy advocacy. The organization designs and develops campaign at state and national levels to highlight the issue of bonded labour and the violation of basic human rights.

So, following Jim's interpretation it would be better to render as follows: **the aware creation of social justice** ?? If I got it right, this is my new option.

Thank you gallagy2
neutral Lara Barnett : I think this works well depending on whether author actually means "creating" from scratch, as opposed to "building" up something that may already be there.
56 mins
Yes Lara, 'presentando proposte risolutive per la costruzione cosciente' may be intended either ways. Don't know what the author wants to enhance
disagree Sylvia Gilbertson : that's not what the sentence says - Jim is right

I have, here, a different interpretation of the Italian terms

Building awareness

"...for building awareness of ..."

Literal translation of verb would work, but substituting the noun for a verb would sound more "English".

" Created by agency Droga5, the campaign’s goal was to build awareness of World Humanitarian Day and as agency creative chairman David Droga says, “help it rise above the general day to day noise.” "

Example sentence:

"Building awareness of human trafficking"

Peer comment(s):

disagree Sylvia Gilbertson : nope, that's not what the sentence says

So what does the sentence say? And how does my answer conflict with Jim's comment?
neutral James (Jim) Davis : Lara either you construct awareness or you construct justice. The Italian constructs justice.

conscious development

.... steps towards the 'conscious development'' of social justice.

It seems pretty straightforward .
Peer comment(s):

neutral James (Jim) Davis : Not bad, but doesn't seem to do full justice :J to the Italian, but then I haven't posted because I can't think of anything that does.
10 hrs
Right, in fact, though the suggestion is formally correct - my own confidence is not high.
agree Sylvia Gilbertson : I actually think this is pretty close.

responsble fostering/cultivation/pursuit/development (of social justice)

some more suggestions, depending on how you want to interpret it - though I'd probably reword the sentence and get it out of the clunky passive voice

that should be "responsible," obviously...
Peer comment(s):

disagree tradu-grace : first of all, there's a typo 'responsible', moreover I have here a different interpretation of the Italian terms
14 mins
Yes, I did see the typo after I posted, and did note that. But the interpretation is valid, I think. The point is that it is social justice that's being created/developed, not awareness.
disagree Lara Barnett : I also disagree that this is an accurate translation for the term. The verb used in "construct" or "build". There does not seem to be any trace of this idea in the numerous verbs suggested.

Literal translations don't always work. There is such a thing as nuance, which is what makes this sort of translation both fun and challenging. IMHO, of course.
neutral James (Jim) Davis : Sylvia I hate these "try one of these" long list answers. It sounds nice, but cosciente is not necessarily responsible. From "cosciente" to "responsabile" is stretching it.

Yeah, I know, but sometimes just brainstorming helps - provided you have understood the Italian, of course.
