Jackie-dart your suggestion was absolutely brilliant! 'rens' in Latin is also the Noun (nominative case & Vocative case, third declension) for 'kidney'... I was only thinking about the surviving chances of the patient/subject and the context. Maybe more context might be helpful. Or maybe the asker has aready a clear idea in his mind.

RENs I found this abbreviation "Adult renal epithelial neoplasms (RENs) comprise several distinct clinicopathologic entities..." is it too far flung to suggest that the morphological abnormalities observed (caused by persistent fetal lobulation) look like neoplasms. I found reports discussing how p.f.l. can be mistaken for scarring

the italian term describes the appearance ... of a known variant. Of course there are no hits for my suggestion. It was an attempt to break down the (I presume) Latin/Italian expression, which also has no hits. With the aim of promoting discussion

dromedary hump this is a different variation "Dromedary humps are prominent focal bulges on the lateral border of the left kidney. They are normal variants of the renal contour, caused by the splenic impression onto the superolateral left kidney" all descriptions I found for persistent fetal lobulation speak of "grooves" or "It is often seen on ultrasound, CT or MRI as smooth indentations of the renal outline in between renal pyramids"

agree I think Jacki's right, a miniature vestigial kidney within the kidney, though 'ANTERIOR to the renal parenchyma', sounds more "on" than "in".

persistent fetal lobulation/lobation could this be a way of describing the aspect of this morphological variant, on similar lines to the 'fetus in fetu' description. using the latin Rens - a sort of kidney in kidney or additional kidney
