Discussion

Ivana UK Mar 8, 2008:
Ivana UK Mar 8, 2008:
Marks out of 60 are quite common in Italian degrees, the results being expressed in "sessantesimi" or marks out of 60 ( i.e. 20/60 would be expressed as "20 sessatesimi" or "20 /sessantesimi".

simona dachille (asker) Mar 8, 2008:
that's my doubt... I thought 30 was top mark too but the Italian person who prepared this text for me said it's marks out of 60. I guess it's the mark which would be just above a pass, any suggestions? These are subtitles, informal dialogue between students, nothing formal. TIA
simon tanner Mar 8, 2008:
supposed to be 20/30
simon tanner Mar 8, 2008:
in my experience, university marks in Italy are out of 30 (and the pass mark is in fact 18, which corresponds to 60%). As Ivana points out, 20/20 is only 33% - a bit low for a pass mark! Check that the original text is correct - it's almost definitely

I'd translate it like this or "with final mark of 20 out of 60".

(... which is basically 33.3%)

then that will be with (final) mark of 20/30 !!
Peer comment(s):

agree simon tanner : if it's just a normal exam, without the 'final', though

yes, you're right (I automatically thought it was the translation of a degree certificate)

low pass

taking into account it's an informal dialogue, 'a low pass' might be best, without specifying, or '65%' if you want it as a percentage, or maybe 2:2 if you want it a British university equivalent. If not, opt for the straight version, and go for Ivana's

Of course, I'm assuming it's out of thirty. If it's out of 60, as Ivana thinks it might be, then 'low pass' still works, but the other options would be 35% (rounding up, since it's informal) and 'a 3rd' or 'a pass'
