Italian term

ritensionamento

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Surveying
Another word I can't find in specialist dictionaries or bilingual websites.

This is about investigating subsidence in a building and effecting repairs.
E.g. "movimento causato dagli interventi di rinforzo e ritensionamento della colonna, eseguiti due anni fa.

The original defects include "detensionamento" of the column infill consisting of rubble in a lime mortar matrix and I found this translated as "loosening" which makes sense. So I'm assuming that "ritensionamento" is reconsolidation, but "consolidamento" is used often in the text so I would welcome any confirmation or alternative evidence.

Discussion

James (Jim) Davis Jul 8, 2014:
You are right I just saw subsidence and dived in, but only in the discussion. I occasionally use stiffen for ground too.
Russell Jones (asker) Jul 7, 2014:
Thanks Jim. I didn't see your suggestion until too late, but as we are talking about columns and piers here rather than ground, I thought Grace's "stiffening" was perfectly reasonable.
tradu-grace Jul 6, 2014:
Hi Jim, After googling a little more (see new links in my option hereunder) I share your point of view. Have a nice Sunday. Grace
James (Jim) Davis Jul 6, 2014:
Hi Russell One of my longstanding specialities is tunnelling and I am very familiar with "consolidamento" of ground, mainly by grout injections. This seems similar. I avoid "consolidation" to avoid confusion with consolidation of clay which shrinks as it dries. Generally, I use ground improvement, treatment or reinforcement. Here I think you could simply say "strengthening" to "strengthen" the ground. "Reinforcement" would suggest putting rods in the ground. My first instinct was "restressing" but not a good idea. Of course if you know how they do it "grout injections" or "jet grouting" you could just substitute with that. Obviously, if it is clear that the ground has "loosened" (I often use this), then you don't need to translate the "re" part.
Russell Jones (asker) Jul 5, 2014:
I had seen that page Silvia, but thank you for giving me reason to reconsider. I had rejected any idea of using "tensioning" because (as an Architect) I know that masonry only acts in compression, not in tension. Your page (and every other reference to retensioning I can find online) only relates to things like cables, but when I searched for tensioning and masonry, I found this: http://www.iitk.ac.in/nicee/wcee/article/14_S18-007.PDF
Clearly, "post-tensioning" is a very valid term in this context and I shall use it here unless anyone has an alternative proposal.

I've found entries for this word here, the word is used in other contexts but it looks to me pretty much the same or similar:

stiffening/stiffening up

Hi Russell,
just a try hence my low grade.
It seems the antonym of loosening is stiffening by googling the term
so, I found the following:

http://www.nycsubway.org/wiki/Difficult_Engineering_in_the_S...
stiffen

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/column
but usually many stacked bricks or concrete block vertically** stiffening**a thin wall again to resist buckling

stiffening the column up /stiffening the column /steffening it up etc.

(stiffen something up = to make something rigid or tense)

HIH Grace - Have a nice working Sunday.

Sorry typo pls read: stiffening it up (not steffening)

and one may also consider ** stiffening up again the column** - If the verb sounds correct to you, it's just a question, as you know better than me, of phrase structuring, rendering .....

Hi Russell,

some other links that seem to support Jim's point of view.

Mechanics of masonry structures
**strengthened** with composite materials modeling, testing, design, control

1 Introduction

Since ancient times, devices have been employed to **reinforce** compressed members. Iron bands
were applied around pillars or columns, still hot or with special devices, as to produce a self stress
state within the compressed member and to result as an active **reinforcement**. Recently, fibre
reinforced polymer composites (FRP) wraps have been substituting the traditional steel hoops……………………….................
In the present paper, results of simple compression and tri-axial experimental tests carried out on
wrapped or unwrapped brickwork and concrete specimens are reported. Obtained results are
compared with those determined applying relationships available in literature or proposed by
official guideline and are discussed.
Interesting considerations are derived on the materials behaviour, the specimen failure modes and
the effective confinement.

Modern structural reinforcement methods were applied as follows: Carbon Fibre Reinforcement (CFK louvres and C-Sheets) was used to strengthen of columns, beams, structural walls and truss members in reinforced concrete; round reinforced concrete supports underwent hooped strengthening with C-Sheets; the bearing capacity of rectangular columns was increased by slotting in CFK louvres and trussed framework nodes were hand-laminated.

Thank you indeed Russell. Grace

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you Grace. I decided to use your "stiffening" rather than post-tensioning (which is clearly "post-tensionamento"), because it is more of a catch-all term (and particularly relevant for walls and columns)."
