Polish term

rozdrobnienie atomowe

Polish to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
W procesie uszlachetniania użyto cząstek srebra metalicznego o rozdrobnieniu atomowym – o wymiarach poniżej 10 nanometrów (dla porównania: wymiary wirusów:15 – 300nanometrów, a typowa komórka bakteryjna ma średnicę ok. 1000 nanometrów).

Discussion

Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Feb 15, 2015:
@M.A.B.: Yes, they are, although scientists can make few-atom silver clusters these days. There are "magic number" clusters, i.e., those that are more stable than others: N = 13, 55, 146, 309, 561, 923, 1415, and 2057...
The behavior of silver clusters (cubic octahedron habit) with magic numbers of atoms N = 13, 55, 146, 309, 561, 923, 1415, and 2057 in the 0–1300 K temperature range is studied for the embeded atom model by the molecular

"rozdrobnienie atomowe" is a bit of an exaggeration. "Nanosized" would be closer to the truth.
Lastly, there is no "nuclear reaction" involved here, no atom splitting.

The silver particles are in aqueous solution:

Then the Polish term is imprecise, as clusters are much larger than atoms... The question is whether the translation should follow the Polish version or correct it a bit.
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Feb 14, 2015:
@MAB: These are silver-atom CLUSTERS . If we take 10 nm (100 Angstroms) as the diameter of the cluster and the lattice constant of bulk silver (4 Angstroms), then we have 25 atoms along the diameter (actually more, as silver has the face-center cubic lattice with four atoms per unit cell) . The number of atoms in such a cluster would be 4*pi*r^3/3 = 8000 atoms. This is what the author must have meant when discussing the atomic dimension of the particles (clusters).

You are right about getting single silver atoms.
I prefer not to say anything about homeopathic uses of colloidal silver.

M.A.B. Feb 14, 2015:
Ta zawiła konstrukcja mówi chyba po prostu tyle, że te cząstki srebra były po prostu atomami. Jak przypuszczam, dokładniej jonami w jakimś roztworze, bo samodzielne atomy srebra to raczej ciężko uzyskać...

metallic silver atom size particles

Atom size particles are evenly distributed and suspended in water molecules, because the silver atoms are so small they do not need chemicals to help them .

Cluster, nanoparticle, atoms

Researchers created silver nanoparticles that are chemically stable owing to a robust core of 32 silver atoms (red and green) that together behave as a single atom of a noble gas.

Bigioni’s nanoparticles each contain 44 atoms of silver, arranged in a highly symmetrical pattern.

Each particle is less than 3 nanometres wide, a scale where the silver has very different optical and chemical properties to the bulk metal.

On sizes of silver particles by grinding

The absorbance spectra exhibited amaximum wavelength ( λ max) at 407 – 415 nm for EG stabilizer and 417 – 420 nm for PVAstabilizer. According to Mie theory [24-25], λ max of absorbance spectra can relate to particle diameter. Thus, our results indicated that the obtained silver nanoparticles using EGand PVA as a stabilizer had diameter of 120 and 140 nm, respectively. Silver nanoparticles with light yellow color have been reported a particles size of 120 nm [26].
