Discussion

Darius Saczuk Jan 28, 2013:
My "magister filologii angielskiej" was evaluated as "Master's Degree in English Language and Literature" by an official US evaluation company. I'd probably go for "American Studies with a Concentration in Language and Literature", as this is the main focus of Polish "filologia" programs.
Darius Saczuk Jan 28, 2013:
The term, I admit, is tricky, though. Why not simply put it as "amerykanistyka" - American Studies. I guess "filologiczna" accentuates the "language and literature" aspect in this case.
Darius Saczuk Jan 28, 2013:
In my opinion, "American Studies" is a little too broad in this case, as it lacks the "filologiczna" part, i.e. dismisses the "language and/or literature" part. American Studies or American civilization is an interdisciplinary field dealing with the study of the United States. It traditionally incorporates the study of history, literature, and critical theory, but also includes fields as diverse as law, art, the media, film, religious studies, urban studies, women's studies, gender studies, anthropology, sociology, African American studies, Chicano studies, Asian American studies, American Indian studies, foreign policy and culture of the United States, among other fields.
Karolina Kogut (asker) Jan 28, 2013:
I don't know. I've got in an e-mail, though. Thanks.
Darius Saczuk Jan 28, 2013:
Philology is never used as a major/concentration name at US universities.
Darius Saczuk Jan 28, 2013:
I don't know why my comment regarding "philology" has disappeared.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Lota : "philology" is not used in Anglo-Saxon cultures as a name of a subject of studies.

Peer comment(s):

agree Hanna Burdon : Although I wouldn't dismiss the word "philology" altogether. True, it is rare in the English-speaking world, but that's because their courses tend to focus on language and/or literature. Our "filologie" are much more theoretical.

There are indeed differences and I've had a few long conversations about this with Poles in the past :). My concern is that putting "philology" down on an English CV can give the impression of having studied something very obscure and impractical. Thanks
agree Lota : "studies" imply theoretical things, by all means, Hanna. The problem is that in Anglo-Saxon cultures "philology" is not used as a name of a subject/area of one's studies.

This will be it in reference to American English studies, unless you meant indigenous peoples and their languages of all the Americas.
