This is a very trivial question, but I did notice that everyone likes to say "东东" instead of "东西". Did I miss something in my education in China? I can understand that it could be a southern Chinese dialect that sounds kinda cute, but it seems like everyone is using it that way exclusively.

It does mean "东西". Guess people use it because it sounds cute.

Add:
Ha, just found out it's called "网语". A few examples:
- 偶 (我)
- 东东 (东西)
- 酱紫 (这样子)
- PMP (拍马屁)
- RPWT (人品问题的缩写)
- 0487 (你是白痴)

weiwei,

Thanks for that interesting little article. That explains the "偶" that appears in the forum every now and then. "俺" 我是听过, "偶"就有点儿莫名其妙了. 我常想: hmm, I wonder where he/she's from?

我喜欢煎饼馃子 Oct 23, 2006

Chinoise wrote:

http://baike.baidu.com/view/25025.htm

早上最爱吃这个了,呵呵。。看了您的帖子,原来煎饼馃子的发明之中有我们山东人的功劳在里面。虽然喜欢吃,不过据说早餐吃油炸的东西不好,当然我是说里面的油条。如果做法卫生,那吃起来就更是肆无忌惮了。呵呵。。。

Xiaoping,

I'd better say something. Otherwise people who don't have a keen sense of the nuances of both Chinese and English on top of this particular context would think that I was disrespecting others and name-calling.

My guess was that 0487 was thought up by someone from the south, someone in the vicinity of Shanghai or Ningbo. Even then 0 had to be pronounced 您 instead of 侬 as far as I understand the accents/dialects from that part of the country (which isn't much BTW). So my conclusion was it had to be read 您是白痴 instead of 你(侬)是白痴 to make sense.

Thus I was basically saying that these people that made this stuff up was a little off their mark. On one hand they are addressing the other party 您 respectfully, on the other they are calling the other party an idiot, kind of an oxymoron in my book.

As for the riddle you made up, the 1st sentence involves 2 idiots, the 2nd only one. But that's as far as I got.
