An old client recently started to include one note for every job assignment. the translator will be charged a 10% fee per day beyond the agreed delivery date. This might help to discipline the translator and let him know that he will have to pay for any unprofessional behavior, both intended and unintended.

I have no objection to that policy. However, if a translation agency delays its payment to a translator, a 10% penalty per day should also be applied to the agency. How is that?

Sounds good in theory. I would also like to see this happen. But in practice, there are quite many employers out there not just translation agencies who don't pay their employees/contractors in time. The empployers and employees are not on an equal footing in this type of situation. Very often, the employees/contractors just want to get paid even if its a late payment.

My client is very nice and I enjoy working with them. They introduced this practice after quite a few cases recently in which translators miss the delivery date without an legitimate reason and don't inform the company that they cannot keep the deadline. I can see sometimes some translators take advantage of others kindness, the same way some translation agencies treat translators.

Back to the original topic, this type of issue would be best resolved through clarification in job order/purchase order.

What a creative idea!--but probably hard to put in practice. One of the translation agent I know recently (last year) started a new policy and required free-lancers to submit the translated document in two stage (half in the middle and half by the deadline), they took this measure due to serveral delayed cases. I guess this might be more acceptable.

我有一个学生,在他上大学的时候,有一天突然起得好早,我在 MSN 上问他,你怎么 5 点钟就起来了,他说像我学习。可快到上午 10 点钟的时候,他说,呀!太困了,受不了了。呵呵。然后就睡觉去了。其实,每个人的睡眠都有个体规律,不必与他人对比,也不要强求自己,否则反而不美。

老孙、tingting、Hanyi 等诸君:

我同意你们的意见,翻译者和 PM 间应该是公平合作的关系,双方以诚相待。有些 PM 欺负翻译,有些翻译欺骗 PM,这不能被称作合作关系,无法获得最佳工作结果。希望所有的翻译人和 PM 都能真诚对待合作伙伴,双方协力满足客户要求。PM 协调、翻译尽心、客户满意,可以实现三赢。

也許這是重點了。翻譯者有了被欺負的感覺,或 PM 有了被欺騙的感覺,合作便無法暢順。

只是人人的感覺雖然不同,但都很容易有被欺負或被欺騙的感覺。這也是為什麼有人告訴我「你每次談起價碼都說得那麼高,那怎會有人肯幫你翻譯」的原因。

最佳的合作是同仁之間的互助網絡,每個同仁各有市場,只有在手上的稿件需要別人支持時,才和別人商量以某個雙方同意的價碼互相支持。如果只是單方面的 PM-譯者之間的關係,互信的基礎很難建立。

互相支援的關係比單方面的工作機會供應容易維持,因為大家都曉得市場上的價碼,幫助同仁時知道應該給同仁的差價。有時我用 0.01~0.04 的價差幫別人審校修潤稿件,一點都不覺得被欺負。反倒覺得對方很看得起自己。相較於某些提出一大堆不是問題的問題,卻一毛錢不花,等著別人提供最佳答案,順道還要別人讚美他們的翻譯大師,那些肯給出 0.01 讓別人審校的同仁真是可愛也討喜許多。由此能建立起的合作關係,會是雙方誠意的合作關係,可以持久。

其實,這就是我曾說過,尋找合作者,最早期應該派予審稿工作的主要原因。一則,從審稿狀況可以鑑定人品,挑選將來應急時所需的翻譯人才;再則,價錢雖然低些,至少不叫人做白工,表示了合作的誠意。

建軍的第四篇內容讓我很好奇,祝他順利處理眼前的工作,早日寫出他的見解。我和建軍很少合作,但他給我的印象一向是辦事牢靠的。他對翻譯者的能力以及其它,判斷能力也是相當準確的。也許有些人會認為他的原則比較僵硬些,但他做事的彈性其實也不小,就事論事是主要的特色。私人感情在我們的行業固然也很重要,就事論事的能力也是考察合作者做事能力的一項指標。過於情緒化的人,臉皮子比較薄,會是很難相處的;那樣的人最好獨立作業,因為合作起來容易摩擦。

一直比较忙,好长好长时间都没有到论坛里逛啦!这里好像越来越热闹了!看了建军先生的遭遇,感觉翻译这门饭真是很难吃。无论是译员还是PM,以及我们的翻译行业,客观地说,永远都处于不断地成长之中,因为世界永远处于变化之中。我与一个ISO认证了的翻译公司合作了很长一段时间了,最近我对一些同事感到越来越不满意了,因为我感觉有些译员和所谓的译审简直就是... See more
一直比较忙,好长好长时间都没有到论坛里逛啦!这里好像越来越热闹了!看了建军先生的遭遇,感觉翻译这门饭真是很难吃。无论是译员还是PM,以及我们的翻译行业,客观地说,永远都处于不断地成长之中,因为世界永远处于变化之中。我与一个ISO认证了的翻译公司合作了很长一段时间了,最近我对一些同事感到越来越不满意了,因为我感觉有些译员和所谓的译审简直就是在混饭吃!哎!好的译员或者说认真负责的译员真是太难找了!所以当有些朋友劝我“扩大作坊”的时候,我始终是一笑了之。医者可以杀人,译者同样可以杀人啊!所以,作为医学翻译人,你这辈子如果能够把人体上那么多血管、神经和骨头记住了,那都是一项浩大的工程啊!至于那些数以万计的基因及其产物,以及其参与的生命活动过程及其干预分子,则是穷十辈子之精力也不够用啊!所以忙的时候,我总是小心翼翼、战战兢兢,闲的时候则是拼命地想睡好觉,吃好饭——为客户,也是为自己——在此基础上,我才敢谈工作,谈质量,以及谈人与人的合作问题。金钱是赚不完的,生命的承受能力也是有限的,所以民族的智者才会发出“知足者长乐”的感慨啊!

但为了表示善意,我同意删掉最后几句话,因此更缺少了一些信息。其实很简单,崇洋媚外的家伙对美国的 PM 会小心翼翼,但对中国人便会装大爷,做出很鸟的事情来。因此,我举出小羊向狮子告坏狼的故事,狮子想不到,在小羊的眼里,狼有多么霸道。

这样的翻译有人格问题,今天他对你好,明天他得了势,可能会伤害你。后天去了势,又完全不顾脸面来求你。与这样的人合作随时会有危险!话说到此,信不信由你...

第四篇我想谈的是项目经理应该理解翻译人、处好关系,并做好翻译的助手。

自认为是 Prime Minister 的 PM,定要失败。请记住,PM 是 Project Manager,换言之,项目管理员而已。任何项目的失败,都是 PM 的失败。

我还是从实例出发来讲解教训。这一回,我的角色是翻译人。我和 A 公司合作两年,是经严格试译被选中的。他们以前的 PM 一直都很信任我,合作很愉快。不久前,A 公司新上任的 PM 派活给我,时间紧、难度大。在我翻译了一万词左右时,PM 发来一封信说:

们一向注重翻译质量,因此有质保程序,由另一人审核译稿,随附审阅文件 xx,和评审表,请仔细阅读后,将错误完全改正,更新全部旧文件,然后发回。请注意不要再发生此类错误。”

我打开文件一看,翻译稿遍体鳞伤、惨不忍睹。细细研究,基本上都是文风修改而已。标出的一个所谓关键性错误,是对方把我的正确翻译改错!我的回信如下(从英文译出,有删节):

“通篇看过文件,似乎基本为文风修改,包括所谓的关键性问题(实际上,我觉得对方理解有误)。我认为,翻译风格和译稿质量永远存在改善空间,但审稿者强调文风差异不公平

翻译原文技术性很强,且时间安排紧。因此,我一直尽最大努力确保质量,每日负荷已超出平常水平。我目前认为无需对现有翻译做任何更改(包括已审核文件)。如果项目全部文件均经第二人审稿,我可以接受,因为如此规模的项目也应有此正规程序。但我无法接受由其他人靠审阅单一文件监督我的做法。给任何人充裕时间审核单一文件相当容易,但在非常紧迫的时间内从头翻译文件却大不相同。

鉴于此,我认为如贵公司认定我风格不符,或我的质量无法满足项目要求,可另行寻找其他翻译。贵公司至今仍未发出 PO,也不必付款,我马上停止工作。”

当天,PM 向我道歉,说发生了误会,又发来 PO,还提前预付一半翻译款等等...

教训:

  • PM 或翻译公司不应要求翻译为超人,可承受无限艰巨的任务。PM 不可将人看成机器,每天的工作效率完全一致。人有生物钟,每天(甚至不同时段的)工作效率差异很大。如果我每日翻译量可达 2,000 词,PM 便按“总词量/每日 2,000 词 = 项目天数”这样的 Dummy 公式计算项目时间,就无法从根本上确保质量。应该体贴翻译人,尽量给充裕的时间(对无赖翻译除外)。
  • 此外,达到一定规模的项目,必须安排翻译和审稿两人。A 公司为了省钱没有安排,却找人看其中一个文件,审稿人为显示才能,胡批三国。我在回信中一针见血,所以对方无话可说。认真的翻译人充分利用对方给予的时间,反复修改和润色译稿,可保证不存在标点和打字错误。审稿的作用是从另一位翻译人的眼光去看问题,原本很好的译稿,经过修改会达到更佳。因此翻译人和审稿人均应认真负责,各司其职,不可互相猜测嫉妒,争风吃醋。此外,翻译和审稿环节不是用来节省成本的。。。

有些 PM 为了省钱(或者是公司政策),将稿子派给低价卖血者翻译,然后让可靠的翻译审稿,这样总成本仍低于后者费率。哈!这是业界不少公司(不乏大规模者)普遍使用的办法。

PM Scrooge 从人才库中发现,Quality 译者为本公司做过近百个项目,且多有其他 PM 的好评,但翻译价格高至 x 元,审稿价格为 x-5 元。Sweaty 翻译是刚刚注册的新人,但价格是 x-20 元。

(x-20) + (x-5) 似乎 < x...

Q 第一次接受了项目,但意见很大。PM S 赚到了钱,根本不予理睬。
Q 第二次不接受项目了,PM S 最后找到了审稿费用相当,却愿意接受审稿的家伙。客户 X 看稿后摇头说:我再也不会使用这家服务了...

高兴审烂稿的人,自己也是烂的。做 PM 的一定要小心,不要因小失大。

找到合适人才后,给对方充分尊重,为争取译者、PM、Client 三赢而努力,最终定会取得满意结果。

建军,不要让那个Medi影响了自己的情绪。吃饭时遇到一粒沙子,但饭还是要好好耐着性子吃下去的。让沙子铺银行前的马路去吧——让我们依然对它心存感激。

如果那个Medi仍然关注着建军的发言的话,我倒建议他读一下著名的《羊皮卷》去......

至于那些正在或将要从事语言工作的人,我觉得他们的话语应该给人世间带来最最美好的享受!
