Module 1 – 10 and 12 May 2016.

German legalIn the first module (consisting of two separate lessons) of this course we will explain the fundamental differences between the German legal system and the Common Law system in the UK and examine how this shows in their terminologies and concepts – and how it affects our work as linguists.

We will determine the role of legal translators and interpreters and the scope of their task by exploring the space afforded to them, and the demands placed on them, within the legal process. There will also be an overview over the subject areas and text types that appear to be most in demand in the EN/DE translation market and the knowledge required for this kind of work.

Finally, for those interested in getting into legal translation, we will show how to go about acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills in a both systematic and cost- and time-efficient way.

You may book module 1 only if you do not wish to do the translation module(s).
Module 2 – Practical translation workshop: 24 May English-German

In the second module, led by Angela Sigee, you will have the opportunity to put pen to paper (or rather fingers to the keyboard) and submit two short sample translations which will be discussed in the workshop (without any naming or shaming!). The sample pieces of about 300 words each will be extracts from typical legal documents. You will also receive handouts with links to online resources for further reading.

Module 3 – Practical translation workshop: 26 May German-English

The third module is practical session for translators working into English, led by Richard Delaney. Participants will receive some texts to prepare before the lesson. These should be completed and returned (as many as you are able) to the trainer one week before this lesson.
