关键不在于想不想当官,而在于当什么样的官。是当廉正无私、兢兢业业、踏踏实实为老百姓谋权益的清官?还是当以权谋私、花天酒地、欺压百姓、嚣张跋扈的贪官,或是当阿谀奉承、饱食终日、无所事事的昏官?所以,不能一概而论,这是最简单的道理。

想当官未必就是坏事,不想当官也未必就是好事。想当官者未必就心灵卑微,嘲笑别人想当官者未必就品德高尚。那么多华裔在美国竞选州长、市长、参议员、众议员,有什么不好?只要自己行得正,毛遂自荐去竞选、去当官也无可非议。如果谁都不想当官,那么为同胞谋权益、打抱不平岂非空话?中国不是也问题多吗?那么谁若真想改革甚至革命,那就不但要当官,而且还得当大官!:D

Yes, I have two of these little critters running around(cocker spaniels), very loving animals. In the background is the backyard fence. Most of the homes in Austin have these privacy fences that are made out of wood slats. They turn greyish after some wear.

这是一位旅美华侨写的回国观感,文章很长而且我觉得某些部分颇为不雅,故未全文登出。以下是有关部分原文:

“旅游景点,万里长城八达岭下的厕所,是要收费的。花了五角钱,进去借用一下。看上去,布局与十多年前城市中居民区的公厕几乎一样。还是一条长沟,隔成数小间,每间依旧无遮拦,门户洞开。所不同的是,没有大排长龙。在烈日爆晒之下,胺气熏天,进去时心情还不错,出来巳是泪流满面。在重庆参观渣滓洞时,也遇到同样的情况,导游看到我泪流满面,不知道我刚从厕所出来,还表扬我:“先生出去了这么多年,阶级感情还这么深!”我真不知该说什么,只好认了。”

文中还提到他在从香港去广州火车上的窘境:

“前年,从香港乘火车去广州,在火车上见识了一下与资本主义接轨的厕所。不能说不干净,但湿漉漉的,似乎从来不曾干过。在纽约,火车上的厕所是用消毒药水来冲洗的,基本上闻不到怪味。这里只用自来水,所以气味依旧浓烈。在国外呆久了,养成了身上不带手纸的习惯,不论走到哪里,只要有厕所就会有手纸。上了香港的火车,以为还是在国外,方便完了,却发现没有手纸。真是急煞我也!翻遍所有的口袋,竟找不出片纸可应急需。不得巳,打开钱包,拿出两张面值最小的钞票,望着钞票上最令我尊敬的美国民主制度的创始人华盛顿,真有点不忍心下手。可此时,这是我面临的唯一的选项,只好请华盛顿先生多多包涵。”

我觉得中国在修建公共厕所上花点钱是完全应该的。老百姓交的税就应该用在老百姓身上。我们在美国就无论到哪里都不必为找厕所而头疼,哪怕是在最偏僻的海滩上。现在国内这方面已有很大改观,但问题还是不少。
